With the current state of the economy, it’s become more important than ever to save money. Every penny counts. After mortgages, Americans’ greatest monthly expense is groceries. There’s great potential to save a lot of money on meat and vegetables as there are a variety of coupons available to cushion the cost.

The problem with coupons is that saving only 20-30% off of the total tally doesn’t seem worth the effort of collecting them. Using the right tactics, though, you can easily save between 50-90% off of your purchases. In this guide, I’ll share some tips on how to shop cheaply using coupons and where to get them.

How To Shop Using Coupons Effectively

Change Your Shopping Habits

To use coupons effectively and get some tangible worth out of them, you’ll have to change your approach towards how you go about grocery shopping. Instead of creating a list of groceries you’ll buy, regardless of whether they are discounted or have coupons, you should plan your meals according to what’s on sale. You may be used to visiting just one store to get all your supplies, but you’ll have to visit multiple stores if you want to make the most out of your coupons.

Buy Items On Sale Using Coupons

Coupons by themselves may not be wholly useful or valuable. However, combining the deep discount of an item on sale with a coupon or two may present good value.

Organize Your Coupons

Label your coupons by name, date and the stores that you can redeem them at so that you can find them easily when the time comes. You could also arrange them by category to keep track of them more efficiently.

Newspapers are the good old-fashioned way acquiring coupons. You should able to find coupon inserts in your Sunday paper regularly. While it may sound a bit over-the-top, you should get multiple copies of them for bigger savings. Multiple coupons will allow you to buy multiple items on sale at minimum prices.
